New Hazardous Materials Collection Center opens on 48th St. LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – A Permanent Hazardous Waste Collection Center opened on 5101 N. 48th St. Thursday. The facility provides a places for people in Lincoln and Lancaster County to safely dispose of toxic chemicals dangerous to put in landfills. Homeowners and local businesses can set up an appointment on the first Wednesday or third Saturday of each month to drop off waste, by appointment only. “Having these materials left at work or left in a household creates a health hazard for employees and for families so I think that’s the best part of this building,” said Deb McGuire, Sr. Engineer, Lincoln Electric System Some materials include pesticides, car fluids, cleaning agents, and thermostats. They facility is a part of the City’s “Taking Charge Goals,” to eliminate the 100,000 pounds of hazardous waster that goes into the landfills each year.
